Proofreading often takes place after a manuscript has completed its first round of edits and is formatted for print. All typos, misspellings, grammatical errors, misused punctuation, and layout issues will be identified and corrected.

Copyediting

Copyediting goes a little bit deeper than proofreading. It should be done before the text has been formatted, but after all revisions have been completed. The copyediting process identifies and corrects:

• Typos and misspellings

• Grammatical errors

• Misused punctuation

• Awkward wording

• Factual errors

• Inconsistencies in plot or character profiles

• Poor organization or flow

• Biased language

Your copyedited manuscript or document will include suggestions for fixing each issue so that the post-edit cleanup is as painless as possible. You’ll receive a style sheet, which includes things like proper nouns, style choices, unique spellings, character descriptions, and major plot points. The style sheet helps you review the edits, and also serves as a resource for future rounds of proofreading (if needed) or for writing and editing that sequel your readers are begging for!

Line editing

Line editing covers everything that copyediting does, but your line editor will also provide you with more detailed suggestions and feedback about your individual voice and syntax, how you can improve the clarity and conciseness of your writing, or how to improve the flow and pacing of the story. Line editing goes beyond correcting and into polishing.
